Uncaria Gambier is a climbing or straggling shrub having square young stems sprouting horizontal branches with recurved hooks that assist the plant cling to supports. These hooks are really modified peduncles of the inflorescences that allows the plant cling to supports. Gambier is collected in the wild for local use and commerce, mostly as a medicine and tannin source. Gambier is often used as a styptic as well as astringent. Diarrhoea and dysentery can be treated with an infusion of the fresh leaves.
